In the long history of optical glass, various compounds have been tried and extensive types of glass have been developed to obtain the optical characteristics (refractive index, dispersion, permeability ratio) in demand.
From a very early stage, OHARA has focused on the ecological aspects of its optical glass, based on a vision of protecting the global environment and using resources effectively. We currently provide most of our optical products in ECO OPTICAL GLASS. We develop and supply in diverse performance variations and shapes low Tg glass boasting impressive quality and performance as the optimum material for the pre-forming lens used in pressing molded small aspherical lenses. We are also pursuing new possibilities in glass, based on our strengths in developing methods of forming optical materials and in manufacturing technology. Using cutting-edge technologies in controlling crystallization, we develop and supply ultra low expansion glass-ceramics as a key, functional material in a wide range of fields such as electronics, to be used for semiconductor manufacturing equipment and liquid crystal exposure devices. We continue to expand our business horizons.

Since our establishment in 1935 as a specialized producer of optical glasses, OHARA has been a major contributor to the development of Japan's industries. At the time of our 50th anniversary in 1985, OHARA future dedicated itself to becoming a world leader in the manufacturing of key materials that corresponded to a diverse and advancing information society. We concentrated on the research and development that would enable us to become a valued supplier for these advanced technologies and services utilized in optoelectronic and electronic field.
The development of ecological optical glasses, glass ceramics for Hard Disk Drives, ultra low expansion glass ceramics, and other multi function specialized glasses is the results of OHARA relentlessly pursuing every possibility that glass has to offer. With future generations in mind, OHARA continually strives to be a company who supports state of the art technologies.
Production Process
The most critical parameters of optical glass are the accuracy of its properties and optical homogeneity. All physical and optical performance criteria must meet design requirements with no variation allowed. In 1998, Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) Management Systems awarded OHARA with ISO9001 certification for its quality management system. OHARA was the first optical glass manufacturer to receive this certification in Japan. The verification of ISO9001 qualification covers the companies complete quality system, including development and design of optical and special glasses, the production process for Hard Disk substrates, etc.
OHARA is widely recognized as having the world's highest class quality control system in every aspect of production, including raw material mixing, cullet melting, cullet mixing, continuous melting, pressing, annealing, product inspection, and shipping. In addition, OHARA pays close attention to overall maintenance and improvement.
